Photographer Aixingero Hing-tong

June Ng | Jul 10, 2008

Passport photographer Aixingero Hing-tong claims his descent from the Manchurian emperors. He displays his pride in his heritage by retaining the ancient look of the Manchus, from his clothing to his queue hairstyle.

Aixingero Hing-tong: No, I didn’t look like this before. I only started to cultivate my Manchu look in 2003, when I finally got recognition from the mainland authorities that I could prove myself a descendant of [The Last Emperor] Aixingero, earning my right to use that as my surname. I always felt a close bond with Manchurian culture, learning all I could from my family. So after I restored my proper surname, I felt like it was my mission to pass on the Manchurian culture and not to let it die. My wife wears a Manchurian outfit, too.

HK: What are people’s misconceptions of Manchuria?
AHT: They don’t know much about it and they don’t care about the truth. Even the Hong Kong Museum of History made a mistake when displaying the Manchurian Eight Flags; they put them in the wrong order. When I told the person in charge, he said that everything was fixed, and there was nothing he could do about it. Many people think that we’re a barbarian race, but they’re wrong. Did you know we invented shuttlecocks and ice-skating?

HK: Why did Manchus adopt the queue hairstyle?
AHT: It’s a clever style that we invented. Our ancestors used to ride horses to go hunting, so having clear vision was crucial. That’s why our ancestors shaved the hair on the forehead—for convenience.

THE CAREER OF THE PROPRIETOR OF AIXINGERO STUDIO

( D & P SERVICE SHOP since 1983 )

Aixingero,Hing Tong, Chinese name Chow Tong and family tree name in serious, Putong, aged 69. He has a wife, a daughter and a son. He was the 4th child of his father. He owns a studio with photo finishing shop in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong. People called him the great Photographer, PHOTO KING.

He was the 11th generation of the khan, Nuriehachi who established a nation, the Tai Jienn in 1616. Chow Tong’s ancestor, Dorieqwun was the 14th son of his father, the khan, Nuriehachi. Dorieqwun’s elder brother was Woung Tai Chi who was the 1 st king of the Qing Dynasty that he changed his father’s nation, the Tai Jienn to become the Qing Dynasty after he took the seat of being the khan of the Tai Jienn. Wu San Qwai was the former general of the Ming Dynasty that he asked for help several times that he needed Dorieqwun helping him to clear off a gang of people that one of them became a king, the Tai Chow in 1644. It was the reason why he could enter into the main land from outside border. And he achieved his father’s ambition to suceed the Manchurian power entering into the main land that his father made a revenage to the Ming power for the death of his father and grand father yet failed at battle and died sooner with regret. Chow Tong’s ancestor, Dorieqwun who became a prime regent helping his little nephew king, Fu Lin, the Qing Dynasty to build up a central power of the Manchurian foundation in Bejin from the north-east outside border, Sheng Yeung. However, he was unfortunately been murdered by a royal secret agent after some years. His baby son, Doriejin was luckily saved by Wu San Qwai through his army force by sending the little kid to hide far away from the old palace, Sheng Yeung for years. However, he needed to escaped from time to time because the royal detectives were searching him. At last, because Wu San Qwai lost power in Yuen Nam, Doriejin escaped from there to the south, Canton. Hence, his decendents spreaded more than 10 generations.

He came to Hong Kong when he was about 13 years old. Firstly, he helped his father to sell poultry in a wet market. However, he changed his occupation sooner as a labour in an aircargo company for years. He studied English daily after duty since he came to Hong Kong until he came of age. He finished a contract as a cook in a carrier at the Hong Kong Royal Navy Force because he wanted to travel around the world without expense. In leisure, he spent a lot of time to take photographes for his hobby. He also liked to collect old stamps, old antique coins of the Qing Dynasty, old papper money notes of Hongn Kong and listening music. Because he was unsatisfied with the quality of the pictures which he dropped orders at photo finishing shops, he himself installed a dark room in his house to learn and praticed the skill of developing film and hand made enlargement. Finally, he did work well that he won 2 times of 1st honour on competion in 1976 and 1977 respectively arranged by the Hong Kong Photography Society. Sometimes, he even won the 3 top ones, and many times of 1st honour on competition. He never expected that one day he would be a top specialist on the field in the society and he could earn his living to support his family for almost of his life. Besides, he was the only technician that he had more than 46 years of working experience on the field in Hong Kong.

By 1973, he was hired as a photo printer, and later making hand made enlargement at Wah King Company of Agfa, the largest laborartory in Aberdeen, Hong Kong developing film and photo processing for all the camera dealer shops in Hong Kong, Macau and inland China. He worked there for many yeasrs. He then hired as a quality control technician at a photo finishing department of Sing Tao Po News Papper Company in Hong Kong. At last, he was hired as a technician for printing and quality control at D & P Service Shop in 1983. It was an important turning point by that time in his life. Afterwards, he started to own bit by bit of the shares of value of the shop because the party of the proprietors splited up and he finally owned the rest of it that his boss sold him within 3 years. He then sold out his little house so that he could afford to purchase the property of the shop. Hence, he became the sole propietor of the shop at last. It was the 1st one of one honour film and photo processing laboratory in Tsim Sha Tsui. There were 13 staffs working for him to pick up orders from all offices, hotels and camera dealer shops. Everyday, there was a huge quantity of orders which was done by the shop. There were 2 photo printing machines working authomatically. At the first beginning, the product which was produced in the shop chosing the chemical solution and the paper was from Sakura, Konica and then finally Kodak. It was the olderest shop in the district that kept the name and same address in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong for 33 years.

Owing to digital camera produced, it changed the market of running business from a regular one into a new stage of the digital aspect of photo finishing in the whole world. It was because he supposed to do something for the Manchurian although he had neither power nor finance, he decided to change his shop to be an outstanding one in the world that it was the unique photo finishing laboratory with Chinese Classical atmosphere in view by putting a lot of things concerning the race in the past. He displayed items concerning the Qing Dynasty, such as hanging a piece of new business board in Manchurian character with golden dragon frame, added one more name, 8 FLAGS PHOTO SHOP, in front of his shop which under ceiling on a giant fluorescent light business signed box for his shop. It still kept the old name D & P Service Shop since 1983 and the trade mark ‘D&P’ with Kodak Express. There were some Manchurian style antique furniture, decorated classical things, handicraft art items with different materials and books conerning the history and the culture of his race were displaying in his shop. He especially hanged the 8 banners around 4 walls with aspects of north, east, south and west. It was the only place in the world that people could find the 8 banners ( one flag inserted at a position for the power controlled by the leader of the team ) displaying the way as in the past at the early of the Tai Jienn. And it was the Fung Shui ( good fortune at position ) position for battles in the army force. Because of power changed, the 8 flags were changed position again and again at different stage of power which was controlled by the royal leadership. Displaying the 8 banners as that way, because it was a meaning of a memory of his ancestor, the khan, Nuriehachi who was the founder of the Qing Dynasty and establishing the family name, AIXINGERO. Chow Tong hanged a pair of an arrow and a bow on the antique wooden screen stand to show that the race was horse hunter in the ancient time. He especially placed a costly antique arm chair for clients to sit for photoes so that when they were sitting on it would be as a king facing south and with a good mood that luckiness would certainly come accross upon them. Indeed, It did work that many customers happily returned and reported him good news. Some made friends with him, some bought him costly food and berverage and some gave him gifts. Those things were very often happened by giving him as an award of prize and although payment for their orders were already done before. Because many customers had great confidence on him, so they returned from local and oversea although the charge was much costly and even more than others. The 2 consulates of U. S. A. and Canada approved his work and recomanded people to come for passport photoes. The Hong Kong Television Broadcasting Company also recognized his photography. By effort, Chow Tong became well known in Hong Kong and in many other countries long time onwards. It was the reason why the shop could be existed there for 33 years in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong. By the way, he wanted to build up a Manchurian sitting room as a museum in his shop. There were 2 pieces of 1st honour prize of silver cups on competition displaying by the side of the antique coins of the Qing Dynasty in a box and all other items concerning the Manchurian culture placing together on the selves in a wardrobe. He wanted to make his shop as a combination of a studio with photo finishing laboratory for business, a Manchurian museum and Manchurian Friendship Society to let the Manchurian having home feel and for those who were interested on the things which was concerning the Qing Dynasty when people stepped in. Some teachers took students to come to the shop for lessons and many reporters came for news on magazines and newspappers even the Hong Kong Television Broadcasting Company also made program for shows and from France for news.

He recovered his family name because the original idendity of his family name, Aixingero was confirmed and approved by the Republic of China in 2003. There was a ceremony held at the temple of his ancestor, the khan, Nuriehachi at Tung Ling ( Fu Ling ) , Sheng Yueng in 2004. There was a high officer who was in charge of Sheng Yeung, Mr.Lin and the leader of the Manchurian, Mr. Aixingileuo, Tak Suen were helping the brothers to carry out the cermony for recovering their original idendity in the name of Aixingero. The ceremony was processing in front of the giant luxury antique alter table in the temple. There was a lot of Manchurian and some descendents of Aixingero family were being the eye wittness for the brothers. After that, they followed the brothers to pay respect at the tombs of their ancestor, the Khan, Nuriehachi’s ancestors at Yung Ling, Fu Suen. They celebrated the ceremony with fire cracker and some people were performing cultural dance in the afternoon and dinner party for them in the evening. The event was broadcasted to the public immediately. Later, the brothers got their new idendity cards with family name, Aixingero indicated on cards to replace the old one at The Hong Kong Immergration Department in the same year. Afterwards, Puyan, the youngest brother of the last emperor, Puyee, the Qing Dynasty was glad to meet the brothers at his home. He gave them a royal specialty to confess that they and him were relatives in the name of Aixingero and being cousins with him. He signed his name and put a chop print on it.

As he respected his ancestor and he loved his race, and he wanted to save the Manchurian culture, he changed his life style by keeping himself as a typical Manchurian with half bored head and a long pig tail at his back. Everyday, he wore Manchurian clothes, listening Manchurian music, eating Manchurian food and paying respect to the 2 ancestors, Dorieqwun and the khan, Nuriehachi before starting work. Chow Tong prefered to be a common person rather than a royal herritage because the Qing Dynasty was over long time ago. Thus, the family name, Aixingero was common as others without anything special. The most significant was the descendents of Doriequen should try to recover the original idendity to fight for the justice and self respect for their ancestor. It was because their ancestor, Dorieqwun had a disastrous event happening on him that he lost his life murdering by the minister, Aul Biey who was the appointed one to do it that ordered by the young king, Fu Lin, the Qing Dynasy. Moreover, all merits, glory and position belonged to Dorieqwun were all destroyed by the king even his family name was out from both the temple of Aixingero family tree and the Royal Recorded Book. It was one of the important reason that the emperor, Kong Chi, the Qing Dynasty sent some young fighters to catch the minister, Aul Biey in the palace afterwards. Some generations of Doriejin had tried the chance yet failed many times during the Qing Dynasty. At last, the brothers could get a chance by fighting more than 10 years to obtain their original idendity in the name of Aixingero was a big meaning to their ancestor, Dorieqwun that finally his blood descendents could be protected and recovered their idendity in the name of Aixingero although the history of the Qing Dynasty could not be amended anyhow. However, that case would be acted as a compensation for their ancestor, Dorieqwun that certainly he must be pleased in heaven.

Chow Tong wishes the young ones loved and be concerned about their root so as to the country, China. He wishes the young ones loved and concerned about their parents, families, and up grade themselve by all means. He was questioned by the foreigners at his shop that they would never regard Chinese as their people although the nationality in the passport books were already changed with their nationalty even born there. Those words were their real feeling that uttered by their mouthes and from the depth of their hearts. In fact, bone and blood never could be changed. Therefore, all Chinese blood must tried the best to improve their weakness by all good ways and non stop to up grade themselves. Be proud of being a Chinese, to be sucessfully on situationin to let the foriegners not just envied but admired by them and being a welcomed one everywhere in the world. To love and conerned one another and for those who was in need of help. Be possitive and brave to creat themselves for the future without regret anywhere. And hopefully to China.
